A bit about Avonmouth, Bristol

History of Avonmouth

The development of Avonmouth began in 1860, with the creation of a landing spot built at the mouth of the River Avon, hence the port’s name. A small village was created to serve the docks and opened in 1877, before expanding as more railway connections were added to the docks. A major expansion of the docks took place in the early 1900s and Avonmouth became the main centre of the Port of Bristol.

Avonmouth’s first church was built in 1934 but was bombed during the Bristol Blitz in 1941. One of the most famous people to hail from Avonmouth is comedian, actor and writer Lee Evans.
