A Bit About Badminton

History

Located in Gloucestershire, the village of Badminton gave its name to the popular racquet sport. The sport was named after Badminton House, a sprawling 52,000-acre estate which is owned by the Duke of Beaufort. The origins of the sport of Badminton can be traced back to the mid-1800s. The village of Badminton is also well known for its annual horse trials, which take place at Badminton House. The five-day event is held in May and attracts around 180,000 visitors each year.

The village of Badminton was named in the Domesday Book when it was known as ‘Madmintune.’ North of the village is Little Badminton, which boasts the remains of a sunken village dating back to the mediaeval period.
