A bit about Bath City Centre

History

Bath is renowned for its spectacular Roman baths which date back to 60 AD which have ensured this beautiful city is a recognised World Heritage Site and one of the Great Spa Towns of Europe.

The vast and impressive Bath Abbey was constructed in the 7th century with additional construction occurring in the 12th and the 16th century. Claims regarding the curative and restorative properties of Bath spring water led to the city becoming a highly popular spa town in the 17th century and is why there are endless examples of spectacular Georgian architecture to admire.

Location and travel

Located in the River Avon valley in South West England, Bath is positioned just 11 miles from Bristol and 97 miles from London. The city shares links with Bristol via the A4 and benefits from easy access to the M4 motorway, which connects South Wales and London.

Bath Spa railway station was designed by famed engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel and offers frequent connections to a variety of destinations, including London Paddington, Cardiff Central, Southampton, Brighton, and Plymouth.

Bristol is positioned on the National Cycle Route 4, which is popular amongst keen cyclists and the Bath Locks waterway is a favourite amongst narrowboat enthusiasts. Additionally, Bath is only 20 miles from Bristol Airport which offers connections to an array of national and international destinations including Amsterdam, Venice, Dublin, Glasgow, and Barcelona.

Local amenities

As the largest city in Somerset with a long and very rich history that attracts more than one million visitors annually. It is home to more than 100,000 residents and countless businesses and notable attractions and amenities, including the Theatre Royal, Victoria Art Gallery, the Herschel Museum of Astronomy, Royal Victoria Park which hosts numerous seasonal events and carnivals, SouthGate Shopping Centre, and the Bath Skyline walking trail which is managed by the National Trust.

A selection of artisanal and independent retailers can be found on several streets in the city, including Milsom Street which boasts an impressive selection of three-storey buildings with Corinthian columns and Mansard roofs, Stall Street which was built in the late 1700s and is home to numerous listed buildings, and York Street.

Today, the city is home to two universities, the University of Bath and Bath Spa University, several notable sports teams including Bath City Football Club and Bath Rugby Union club, and the city hosts an array of events including the Bath Literature Festival, the Bath Fringe Festival, and the Bath International Music Festival.
