Thornbury and Thorburn Trading Estate

History

Human activity around the Thornbury area can be traced back to the Neolithic period, but the town itself received a charter from Richard de Clare, Earl of Gloucester, in 1252. At that time, it revolved around its cattle market. Thornbury Castle was built during the 1500s in Tudor times for Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham. Even Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn stayed there at one point. Today, Thornbury is known for its status as a “Britain in Bloom” winning town with its own horticultural competition and for hosting the shop that inspired Arkwright’s grocery in Open All Hours. The town’s population is a little over 12,000 people. Thornbury in Pennsylvania takes its name from Thornbury in Gloucestershire.

Location and Travel

Thornbury is located in Gloucestershire’s Severn Valley, not far from Bristol. You can easily drive, cycle or take the bus from the city, where you can also find Bristol Airport. The town has three public car parks. Thornbury Railway Station once saw trains running mainly to and from Yate, but it closed to passengers in 1944 and goods in 1966. Part of the site has now been turned into a supermarket. Thornbury is a popular tourist destination that can provide a good base for exploring the wider South West.

Local Amenities

At its heart, Thornbury is still a market town with a bustling high street that is considered a conservation area. There are plenty of local, independent shops as well as two larger supermarkets. Thornbury Castle has been turned into a private hotel and there are plenty of other accommodation options in the surrounding area. The town is also well supplied with cafés, restaurants and pubs, as well as more than one farm shop selling local produce such as meat and cider. The Thorburn Trading Estate provides a site for a range of different industries.

Multiple halls are available for fans of live music, and church halls and even the leisure centre may also host events. The leisure centre is also home to a pool and gym. Thornbury Carnival takes place every summer. Playgrounds, playing fields and a golf centre also ensure you have plenty of opportunities to stay active, or you can enjoy walks in the beautiful surrounding countryside. History lovers should also visit the museum.
